Re: Bench testing '63 Johnson 75

Got it started! Checked the timing marks, tested & replaced the coil this evening, plugged in a gas tank, pumped a bulb & viola! She runs and smokes and smells horrible in a very wonderful 2 strokey, teenagers at the lake bugging Dad for another run before it gets too dark, kind of way.

Re: Bench testing '63 Johnson 75

Solved it! There's 4 Terminals on the solenoid: 2 large and 2 small. One of the small takes current from the ign switch to activate the solenoid. The second small goes to a switch at the distributor mounting that trips as the distributor advances/retards (dont know which yet). I had the switch tripp...

Re: 62 Sea Lancer deck construction

Excellent point Phill. I agree that I should make the bulkhead fit. I'd like to snug it up tight, but original construction appears to leave some space at the ends. Anybody foresee any probs if it's tight? Thanks, Mike.

Re: Bench testing '63 Johnson 75

Thanks Ron. It's a little rough in there? That's after I sucked the webs & leaves out! If I get this thing running, I'll do a proper cleaning. Anyway, The starter works fine on the bench and on the engine when it was still on the boat, so the connection there is OK. I've got juice to the ign swi...

Re: Bench testing '63 Johnson 75

SMARTINSEN posted a wiring schem for me over at the WB forum that shows the starter motor grounded to the powerhead. I'm thinking that ground strap connects to the bolt that mounts the starter.

Re: 62 Sea Lancer deck construction

Bulkhead/deck/gunwale issues: I'll be replacing the deck and instrument panel (bulkhead) for obvious reasons, and I've noticed a substantial gap at each outboard end of the bulkhead and the inwale. About an inch at starboard and maybe 1/2" at port. Does anybody have hull dimensions for this are...

Re: Bench testing '63 Johnson 75

Thanks Ron. I pulled the starter and tested OK. Since I've got movement at the ammeter when I switch it on, doesn't that mean I've got current at least to there? In which case my harness/connections s/b be ok? I'm wondering if I need to have the tach or something else wired into the harness, or that...

62 Sea Lancer deck construction

Hi guys. Got under the deck on my Sea Lancer and saw that the deck frames have a strip of what appears to be a strip of 1/2" ply between the ends of the frames and the ribs, with little plywood spacers where needed. The strip runs from where you can see in the pics to just abaft the stem. Is th...

Bench testing '63 Johnson 75

Hi guys. I've got my Johnson super seahorse electramatic 75hp on a stand with the controls and ignition switch mounted & hooked up on the stand, along with that box that mounts aft with what looks like voltage reg & stuff in it. I've also got the ammeter from the boat mounted & wired in ...

Re: Twin Engines

If you have any prop walk, you'll probably only notice it backing. It's common on large inboard twins to have counter rotating props, but on a small boat it can useful when docking if it's significant, especially an inboard. I haven't driven an outboard in a while and it occurs to me that being able...

Re: Our first wood boat

Hi Andreas, I kept the boards for patterns, etc., so I'll inspect them for assembly holes. I've got a post in "Restoration" with a link to all my pics so far. BTW, you sent me some great pics and identified the boat for me few days ago via email before I registered on the forum. Pretty goo...

Folding seats for 62 Sea Lancer

Hi guys! I've recently acquired a '62 Sea Lancer and I need to replicate the folding seats that I think came with it, but I have no dimensions or hardware. Andreas sent me some great pics of seats installed, but I need to figure out how to build them. Has anybody else tried it? Anybody with the dime...

Re: Our first wood boat

Hey Shaun, I just picked up a 62 Sea Lancer, looks identical to yours except for color. Needs restoration also. My bottom and internal structure looks pretty sound so I'm not going to flip it over if I don't have to. I will be replacing the deck and gunwale covers and probably build a new windshield...
