Re: gap

He is asking .... " gap between the garboards from the end of the outer keel to the transom" . This sounds like someone has shortened the (outer) keel and it doesn't extend to the transom. The keel should extend all the way aft, with a taper to about 1/2 - 3/4 " thick at the transom. ...

Re: Hooked bottom

Just a word of caution, I would strongly advise against simply adding weight to the inside of the hull. I expect that that will only succeed in destroying the joinery at the transom. Any force applied downward must be counteracted with an equal and opposite force acting (up) against the transom join...

Re: Hooked bottom

The problem of the "hooked" bottom is all too common on our old wood boats. Expanding on Robert's plan #1 idea, I have wondered if the following would work.... Three strong timbers (6X6's) as strong backs under the hull (hull in the upright position) extending from aft of the transom to we...

Re: Motor Controls for 18 hp 1957 Evinrude Fastwin

Yes, what Ron said.... if the engine in NOT running do not try and force the shift lever. The way I adjust the shift cable is to first disconnect the cable end from the motor shift lever. Next while turning the prop by hand , shift the motor lever into "F" . Now go to the control box and s...

Re: Planning Surface

I see that no one has responded to your question, so I'm thinking that maybe we can kick-off a discussion. My guess is that the further astern the concavity the more pronounced the effect will be on handling. The worst condition would be for the "hook" to be immediately forward of the rans...

Re: ribs

If you are working from the inside of the hull and the garboard planks and inner keel sisters (doublers) are still in place you will encounter a bit of an issue with the original fasteners. When you remove the rotted rib end there will remain a wood screw and a brass nail coming up into the keel sis...

Re: Nails for covering board on 67 Sea Coaster

Here is a suggestion... not easy, but it worked for me. Jamestown sells 1 " ring shank Stainless Steel boat nails. Unfortunately the heads are a bit too large to sink. This took a while , but I chucked each nail in the drill press and filed the head down to a smaller size, ended up with like a ...

Re: Getting there

She sure is a beauty! I see that you have her all set up with a nice vintage helm, so will you hang a vintage outboard on the transom as well? That rig would be a real hit at any of the Antique Outboard Motor Club outings. The guys would love to see that rig. You could check out "upcoming event...

Re: 1940 Rowboat

Just a thought, but you think that the Livery boat simpley had heaver (deeper) and more substantial gunnels? This to better withstand the expected abuse of rental service. This might explain the slight increase in depth with an otherwise identical hull.
