Keelson Straight?
Picked up my white oak for keelson and sisters (cheeks) today. Inspecting original keelson still on boat it appears to have slight curve (rocker). Is this correct? I had the impression from other posts that the keelson's are a straight shot from transom to stem. Also, I need to replace the stem that...

Keelson replacement
I have ordered 6/4 white oak for my keelson. This is three parts. There is decay at the ends of several ribs. I would like to cut back decayed ribs and lay in lengths of new (air dried) white oak along side of trimmed ribs attaching new pieces to the keelson. I need feedback on length of new materia...

Trailer and boat
Pete Thanx for the update. My trailer sits "ugly" in the back yard because my boat is upside down in my garage still. I was inspired this past week by my brother-in-law who said "dude you need to get this thing done and in the water- it's so cool". As I write this I think my wife...

Optional wood or vinyl
Rick I had a couple people post pictures of Thomboys with wooden decks. The boats were not '64's that I recall. Someone had told me wood or vinyl were options. No additional cost for either. Turns out my boat is a '65. The transom has two numbers. The '64 number is "X" out and an additiona...

Short frames
Andreas
Short frames, possibly length of garboard and first strake, tied into keelson for additional strength (bottom to keelson). Necessary?

Leaving old solid stock in place
Andreas What is your thought on leaving (cutting back to good wood) frames and installing replacement next to old. I would attempt use the machine screw holes to screw new frames into place. I would mirror any such repairs at opposite side. Still wondering what areas of attachment at deck area? What...

Replacing Frames in 1966 Thomboy
I have at least 8 frames to replace starting at transom. Boat is upside down and Garboards are removed. (note: replacing keelson also-see other posting for input) Frames have single screw and nail at keelson. I'm not sure how they are attached at top-can someone tell me? Frames appear to be 1 inch x...

Keelson and frames
I am replacing the keelson after feedback from members. What should I ask for when ordering white oak for Keelson?
Quartersawn?
Kiln or air dried?
Obviously straight!
What is best method for beveling edges to angle of bottom?
Should I replace frames prior to keelson?
Any other advise is welcome.

Wood checking @ keelson
Picture of checking at keelson. This scrapes off without much effort. 1/8 inch deep maximum. How should I treat this area? The plan is to add an additional piece of wood @ each side of keelson (8/4 or 6/4 white oak). http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/5770/thompsonrehab002ec6.th.jpg http://img262.im...

Just looked at boat and thought the sister keelsons could be used as patterns for the additional members at the sides of keelson.

How to determine angle of cut for keelson side pieces
I have decided to secure additional wood members to each side of my keelson to address the end decay on the frames/ribs. What are some techniques for determining the angle at each frame in order to transfer it to my material prior to cutting and planning? I've thought about cutting individual blocks...

Great job Bill I'm thinking glass to observe level of water. Do u have your old science kit? I'd try a test tube. Drill hole in top slightly larger than OD of tube. I recall tubes having a lip. Slide tube in and view water level from interior of tube. I'll probably use foil backed insulation board. ...
