The first thing you need to do before worrying about varnish, is check the condition of all the structural components of the boat. Get the floor boards up and check the keel and stringers and ribs. Look for soft wood - poke around with a scratch awl or ice pick or screw driver. If you can push into ...

Welcome aboard! Paper work such as registrations and titles are notorious for being innacurate. So don't pay much attentionto them. What is the hull ID? This will be stamped into the wood of the transom, inside the boat. Usually on the starboard side. This is very important to ID the boat. Sometimes...

Obviously the bow light should go up front.

Lifting ring or cleat next.

Horn is nearest the windshield frame.

I don't have spot lights on any of my boats. Many people place them off center.

Shrink wrapping a wooden boat is a NO NO.

I do not see the padded bolsters - eyebrows on the dashboard which should be on the 1962 Off Shore model. Is it possible it's a different year? What is the hull ID (stamped into the wood of the transom) and what is the serial number (stamped onto rectangular metal plate)? Or maybe someone removed th...

It sure looks like a compass. Not sure about the letters on the indicator, however.

Nice looking boat! Wow - she's an inboard/outboard. What year and model is she?

Speedometer pick-up device

Alrighty...where do I place the speedometer pick-up device on the back of my boat? This is the plastic device that attaches to the transom and has the flip down thingy. The tube that goes to the speedometer on the dashboard attaches to the flip down thingy. Do I place it perpindicular to the water's...

r ye a pirate to paint yer boat black?

I love Kirby paint - great stuff!

I have used gloss for white and lemonade yellow painted Thompson boats. It dulls over time.

I use OLD SALEM SEALER after the stain and prior to varnish. Typically one coat.

Well I'll be a monkey's uncle! I did not realize that Cortland boats were constructed that way. Very intereting. Their 1960 bochure talks about the ribs being away from the keel. They must have made this design change after the split with Thompson of Peshtigo.

Clean up and loose fibers and sand. Use a marine filler such as Smith's Fill-It and fill. Let it dry and sand to the desired shape.

Glad you let us know that your boat too did not have the floor fastened to the floor risers.

I don't know what to recommend.

I have never seen up close and personal the bilge of a Thompson Bros. boat bigger than 18 ft. So maybe those 1 x 2's are original. I just don't know. If original, they would almost certainly be white oak like the other floor framing and stringers...
