Andreas, did you ever get around to trying the Z-Spar #1095 Standard Mahogany... ref, previous thread on stain tints. I believe that this is the closest match to the original Peshtigo factory tint. Your thoughts ?

ref my last post ... just checked the West Marine site, Yes they have the Z Spar "Mahogany" #1095 filer/ stain it's their cat. number 195305. Note that this is not the "red" nor the " brown" mahogany stain ... it's the just right (in my opinion) shade.

I have used Z -Spar Standard Mahogany #1095 "Filler Stain" exclusively on my 57' Sea Lancer. I'm happy with the color. I don't think it's too red and seems to match what I assume was the original stained wood. Now I will say that the can I have is at least 8 years old. Don't know if that s...

1960 75 HP Johnson

If someone is looking for a classic outboard for their classic Thompson, Just saw what appears to be a really nice motor posted (2/23/07) on the www.aomci.org "classified ads". The motor comes with it's controls as well as an extra set AND two spare parts motors to boot. The 1960 75hp is a...

Dan, thanks ,,, Well, here's the story... the bow light, which was on the boat when I bought it is apparently a rare item. I've not seen another like it nor have I found anyone who can identify it. It looks real cool... kind of like an F86 Saber Jet, really fits the era/ boat. The only reference I'v...

Thanks guys for the kind comments... much appreciated. Every time we use the boat we draw attention. I'm espically proud of the upholstry. The late Jim Hickman from Anderson IN had a similiar Lone Star with authenticlly restored upholstry. Jim and I met thru the Antique Outboard Club (AOMCI). He hoo...

Checking Peter Hunn's book "Tail Fins and Two Tones" found two mentions of the Glaspar "Lido" ( not Club Lido ?) . Both instances refer to the boat as a 1960 "entry level" and "budget friendly" 14 footer. The color pic ( page 153) shows a pretty plain boat, do...

Assuming we are not talking about the high ethanol E85 blend, just the 10% or so "usual" consumer fuel mix... I thing the problem with older outboards is more acute than a little moisture retention. The alcohol in these new fuel blends will attack and soften the rubber hoses, seals and pum...

2006 Rally video

I've been wondering what ever became of the commercially produced 2006 Rally video. So... I went to Skylight Media's web site and ... behold it's available. $18 plus $3 S$H. I just mailed my check today, we will see what shows up. Have any of you bought this video yet ? PS, they also still have the ...

Evercoat "Formula 27" is a 2 part poylester resin that works really well above or below the waterline. Available at boat supply stores. Mix the two components and it sets up in a few minutes. Can be sanded and painted. Although it's priced like a marine product ... seems pretty much like g...

Don, sounds like you have a nice boat there. The rib end rot you describe is a pretty common problem on Thompsons because of the design of the joint at the keelson. The rib ends absorb water water thru the end grain and to make matters worse there are two fasteners through each rib end which allows ...

James, the above guidance is, no doubt the right way to do the job. If however you are not ready to tackle a major rebuild, there are a few stop gap ( no pun intended) measures that can be taken. If you can localize the source of the leak all the better. If the leak is at the keel, removing the oute...

A word of caution on the spot repairs. I would not recommend using penetrating epoxy sealer on any spot repairs where there is a discoloration issue. I would think that the epoxy will permanently lock in whatever color stain you have, you will never be able to do an overall strip and refinish at som...
