You know, I wish I'd brought the one hull emblem I have back to California with me. In the back of my mind, I was thinking I should but couldn't seem to flash on the why. Now I have. I have all winter to go buy a piece of 1" - 1-1/2" thick mahogany, trace the outline of the emblem on the p...

Forget about the elixers and side show huckster products. Rot is rot and the wood has lost its strength and it should be replaced, not have gooooge poured over it. This tells you what I think about impregnating wood with resins and other goop. Andreas Andreas, You know, this is a case of trying to ...

Back to the subject matter of this thread. I've read the thread on the building of the 72' Schooner pretty much back to front and front to back. One of the things that jumps out at me that I've seen dicussed a bit on this forum is impregnating wood with resin or resin type products. This is a big is...

Andreas, Whenever I read of the passing of someone like Mr Anderson, I feel saddened; not only for the loss to the person's family and friends, but the loss of skill, talent and knowledge to us all. At 90, he lived a full measure of life and then some but I am sure that if any of us could have met t...

Wish I could help you with the rail Andreas. The picture of the boat on the trailer in the driveway sure made me drool.

I was under the impression that they run up a couple of sails and cast off all lines for an hour or so every year as part of the turning process.

It is easy to forget there are skilled craftsman in every country. That boat is beautiful. Time was, a boat like this could have been built in Maine at any number of shipyards. These days, I don't know. The Maine Maritime Museum runs a wooden boatbuilding school and there are small yards that take ...

Incredible Build

I hope it's ok to mention something from another website here. While looking at different threads on 'The WoodenBoat Forum" I came across a thread about a build of a 72ft wooden Schooner in Vietnam. There are many detailed pictures of this effort from laying of the keep on up. If you appreciate...

Thank you Andreas and pardon my ignorance. After reading your post , a quick check via Google turned up a 1944 35ft for $695,000. And a host of sites and books as you mention. I've always loved boats, but only recently have become interested in them for their proper place in history, the lore of tho...

You don't mention how often you plan to use this boat, how patient you are etc etc. I say this because you'd be trading an engine with electronic ignition for one without and that's a big thing if you want a hassel free boating experince. Also, if you want a period engine why not try to locate a 62 ...

Looks like an Old Town to me. The style of the cane seats looks very familiar. We've had one in the family for 70 years. If it is, it will have a serial # burned into the bow. Old Town keeps meticulous records and is very good about responding to inquires on their antique canoes.

If I may hazard a guess. Painting a wooden boat back in the day would not have been seen in the same light we see it today. I believe, one of the reasons Mahogany was used was because it will stand up to water without rotting better than most woods. And the places where it grew (primarily 3rd world ...
