Re: '53 Thompson Thomboy Refinishing Project

Andreas,
I love the way the registration numbers are painted on the hull rather than those tacky looking stick-on numbers. Very classy.

Re: Hooked bottom

I understand that consideration. My suggestion would to be to support all the areas under the hull that are not hogged and only apply the inside weight over the hog.

Re: Hooked bottom

Well, it took a long time for the hog to form from letting the boat sit on something that pushed it up due to the weight of the boat itself, so why not try reversing the process? Maybe setting a large weight on the inside of the boat (like an engine block) would perform the same thing in reverse? It...

Re: Planning Surface

Peter, I know this sounds like more work for you, but since the hull was completely flat when it was built, I'd be inclined to bring it back that way and take the guess work out of it. I think you'd be pretty unhappy if you decided to stop when you thought it was "good enough" and then sti...

Re: Bottom Rebuild (prev. 'At a cross road')

Peter,
Shouldn't that splash rail be varnished rather than painted? OR is that a Cortland thing opposed to the Peshtigo look?

I don't think so Peter, but I"d try some Spray Nine or Purple Power first with a scrub brush.

Peter, You certainly do know how to work with that old wood. Don't think the lack of responses to your thread indicates a lack of interest. I'm following every step to learn the techniques which I will need to apply to my own Thompson someday. Keep up the good work and the reporting!

Re: At a cross road

Peter,
Here's one like I mentioned. http://www.ebay.com/itm/331592123252?_t ... EBIDX%3AIT

The stem needs to be redone and I don't know what else, but it looks good. (keep your motor!)

Re: At a cross road

Pete, Since rebuilding boats is not your hobby nor do you have the experience to jump in and tackle the job, I'd suggest you find a new owner for her and move on. It's not only that it needs "normal" repairs, but previous owners have changed things and mucked up the originality. I see boat...
