Making great progress!
I was considering the semi gloss vs. Gloss as well. Let me know what you think

Re: 1963 Sea Coaster Deluxe project

my boat is planked in plywood vs. MDO. When applying CPES on plywood one just needs to keep in mind there there only an 1/8 inch or less of wood before the first layer of glue. so not much is going to soak in (i.e. , dont over apply). That said, I was amazed at how much CPES soaked into that first p...

Re: Bottom Rebuild (prev. 'At a cross road')

Hey Rich, What you see is the original construction. Thompson of Cortland New York (aka Cortland boats) of my vintage were constructed differently than most of the boats of that era that I am familiar with. Instead of the frames running down to and ending at a once piece Keel, the frames in the Cort...

Re: Bottom Rebuild (prev. 'At a cross road')

Haven't abandoned the project. Just been busy with other demands, like a week's vacation in Florida! I've shifted my time to building a shed under the deck/sun room for when the "too cold to work on the hull" weather gets here and i wanna park my car in the garage for a change. That said. ...

Re: Bottom Rebuild (prev. 'At a cross road')

Started in on it last night. Removed the non-original floor stringers that I had put in when I got the boat (2006) for easier access for installing shims. Also started on removing the fasteners. I don't expect i will be able to reuse most of them as they will be too short after shimming, but I am ta...

Re: Bottom Rebuild (prev. 'At a cross road')

I thought a lot about the approach of shimming the bottom from the inside as you guys described in the other threads etc. I didn't want to get into more disassembly of the structure, so I was spending more thought on the "fill the hook from the outside approach". A few nights my son and I ...

Re: Yet another keel cap thread

Sounds like the best approach to me. Trying to remove the screws would, as you say, tear up the wood, and you may end up a screw hole too big for the new screws.
Looking forward to some pictures!!

Re: Bottom Rebuild (prev. 'At a cross road')

Started on fixing the hooked bottom. By started I mean thinking about the approach some more and deciding how far forward from the transom I am going to address. I took an 8 foot straight edge and laid it out on the boat with the leading end at about two thirds of the length of the hull, the other e...

Re: Bottom Rebuild (prev. 'At a cross road')

Having thought it over a bit, I am going to take care of the hook next. My plan for tightening the fasteners is to start at the Garbord strakes and work my way up, alternating from port to starboard. So I figure it would make sense to start with refastening the garboard panels, then fix the hook, th...

Re: Bottom Rebuild (prev. 'At a cross road')

It's been a few weeks, but finally found time for some boat work. Finished off removing the filler from the screw holes. The upper planks go really fast as the putty was very dried out and most would just pop right out. Probably helps that the boat is bone dry as it is in my garage and it has been h...

Re: '53 Thompson Thomboy Refinishing Project

Hmmmm, a rare instance where I'm on a different mind set than Andreas. I like the red bottom better than what I think a white bottom would look like given the bottom paint comes so far up the hull. I think the contrast would be too much. That said, maybe a white bottom with a three inch Red Boot Str...

Thanks for the compliments! It's not so much patience as it is the enjoyment of the work. It's therapy of me.
I would love to see pictures of your Yellow Jacket (as would we all I suspect)

Re: keel attachment

It's a shame that so many otherwise great boats have been so badly damaged that way. If you can slide your fingers through the gap, she'll never be able to get to plane (without a bottom rebuild)
