Re: Bottom Rebuild (prev. 'At a cross road')

Hey Robert, There are a few frame ends right at the very bow that are rotted away. Once I get the boat back upright from the hull work, I'll address those - thinking either steam bent replacements, or maybe laminating/scarfing in new ends. I havent gotten to work on her for weeks now - been fixing b...

Re: Hooked bottom

Wow. I like it Joe. When I get to that stage I'm going to have to pull out the "thinking stool" (a famous Andreas quote) and decide which way to go

Re: Hooked bottom

I have the same hook issue. It very much affects the handling of the boat. My approach is similar to your option 2. Going to epoxy thin strips (say, 1/8th inch) of white oak into the hooked area so as not to have so much filler. Get it close that way, then screws into the frames (just a few for that...

Re: sea coaster stringers

Try a hacksaw blade mounted in a pistol grip handle like in this picture. You can slide the blade in between the frame (rib) and the stringer. The blade is flexible enough that you can angle it in. Work it back and forth till you feel it hit a fastener, then saw away. Take care to keep the blade all...

Re: Bottom Rebuild (prev. 'At a cross road')

The paint stripping is completed and I am hoping to be done with the bung removal today. Then I'll move on to tightening/replacing all the planking fasteners as mentioned up above. My mother always said, "Don't pick at a scab'. That's good advice that I have never been able to heed. When I was ...

Re: keel attachment

Are you talking about the keelson (inside the boat) or the Keel Cap, outside the boat on the bottom of the hull?

Re: Disassemble steering wheel?

on my Cortland boat the center cap pops right off, underneath is a bolt on a threaded shaft. Took that off, and discovered that that wheel will NOT come off unless I want to destroy it. Tried a few different wheel pullers, etc. No Go,

Re: Bottom Rebuild (prev. 'At a cross road')

Hey Steve,
I'll be using Smith's Fill-it - great stuff. Used it before on the bottom to repair Delamination of the garboard panels and transom. After 10 years it was rock solid no change. I've used total boat's epoxy filler, but it's not nearly as good in IMO.

Re: Bottom Rebuild (prev. 'At a cross road')

I haven't posted in a while, but have been working on the hull whenever possible. Hour here, two hours there. I've gotten all the paint off the port side and all the screw/bolt hole filler out of all 800 or so holes on that side. I was using a couple of sharp pics to pic the putty (or expoxy, or cau...

Half way there on stripping the hull. The other side is underway. Next is redoing the screw hole filler and sanding.
