Re: another Off-Shore Cabin Cruiser appears
I cleaned the boat out this morning and power washed her. She looks soooo much better. The photo is in front of her birthplace, the old Thompson Boat factory in Peshtigo. Jeff Thompson took a look at her and approved! Andreas http://i232.photobucket.com/albums/ee189/ThompsonBoat/Off-Shore%20cabin%20...

Re: another Off-Shore Cabin Cruiser appears
It was filled to the brim about two hours after the doors were installed. I have other "stashes" of boats!
I have three Thompson boats in my garage too - and I can park my truck in their to keep 'em company!

another Off-Shore Cabin Cruiser appears
A 1959 Thompson Bros. of Peshtigo 18'-8" Off-Shore Cabin Cruiser has seen the light of day for the first time in a couple of decades. First photo is in Port Angeles, Washington after the boat was moved from here shed where she has been tucked away for 20 years; http://i232.photobucket.com/album...

Re: Rib Repair
That's not the best approach but I have seen it done on boats. The best way is to use a sloped scarf cut in the end of the ribs. Glue and screw or bolt the scarf together.

Re: 58 sea coaster keel rebuild
Everything was nailed together first before being screwed or bolted. So there most likely are nails still holding stuff together after you removed screws and bolts.

Re: paint
It would not make any sense if the boats were not painted at the factory. I suppose in the early days they were painted with brushes. They certainly used a spray booth by the 1950s. I just met with a former Peshtigo boat plant worker from 1958 to 1963. He talked about a "glazing" on the ba...

Re: Stain colors, varnish for '53 Thomboy
The stains on the 1953 strip-built Thomboy and 1960 Sea Lancer may be different, especially if the Sea Lancer is a Cortland built boat vs. Peshtigo built. I truly do not know the correct stains for use on the '53 Thomboy. I have used Z-Spar Filler Stain on the lapstrake boats made after 1953. Their ...

Re: gap
Sorry Joe, wrong. Starting about 1960 Thompson Bros. Boat Mfg. Co. shortened the outer keel. It stopped about 24-30 inches short of the end of the boat. Pete Thompson told me that it as to reduce interference with the propeller on the outboard motors. The garboard planks came together at the centerl...

Re: Andreas health report
I had to have another biopsy today to check for new cancer. I am not a happy camper. It probably isn't cancer but it still stinks.

Re: gap
Use marine flexible caulk such as BoatLife. There should have been an aluminum metal trim piece screwed over the seam once the seam was caulked.

Re: Sea Coaster versus Sea Mate
Sea Coaster and Sea Mate are two completely different models. Thompson Bros. Boat Mfg. Co. did NOT have the Sea Mate model until 1963. There was no such thing as Sea Mate prior to 1963. In 1963 the Sea Mate was 14'-7" centerline length and the Sea Coaster was 16'-6" centerline length. For ...
