Re: Is it worth fixing?

Is that first boat the one that needs the keel sealed to get it in the water? If so, spend your time on that to get it ready and take your time and have fun working on the other one...
Love the Mansfield - reminds me of my uncle's boat - the one that hooked me on wooden boats as a kid

Re: Is it worth fixing?

Cant tell from pictures if the transom is sound, but if you are going to use it, especially with that heavy motor, in any kind of wake and wave, you have to be sure it is or disaster can ensue out of nowhere. All those frames and the other rot needs to be fixed. Filling the bilge with epoxy won't a ...

Re: Bottom Rebuild (prev. 'At a cross road')

Great question. I think it was painted on that model. However when the time comes I will reference the catalog pictures that I have from the Thompson Catalog CD and either paint or varnish it. Since these pics I have removed that black trim piece (attached with small screws, so that was easy) and st...

Re: Bottom Rebuild (prev. 'At a cross road')

First pass at stripping the garboard panels complete, save that white section at the bow. One more pass with stipper to get as much paint as possible, then sanding to get to nice clean wood. CPES won't soak in through paint. That dark section at the bow is where I spread CPES before deciding to flip...

Re: Planning Surface

Thanks for chiming in Andreas. The worst of the hook is right at the transom. It was caused by that all too typical mistake of leaving the boat on the trailer on roller bunks that did not extend past the transom, with an engine on the transom. I say this because when I bought it, that's how it was s...

Re: Bottom Rebuild (prev. 'At a cross road')

Since it is Spring in Delaware, I was able to start some paint stripping on the hull. I wanted to get the garboard panels done so that I can tinker around with the approach for fairing the bottom. This stripper softens epoxy filler right up, so on the planks where I had already refilled the screw ho...

Re: Bottom Rebuild (prev. 'At a cross road')

A quick gauge of how much hook is in the hull. not sure how well the pictures will come out on screen. The board is 4.5 feet long. Max gap about 3/8 inch First shot is next to the garboard strake, second about half way between that spot and the keel, the third on the keel. Other side is about the sa...

Re: Bottom Rebuild (prev. 'At a cross road')

She would slip a bit in the turns, but I couldn't run her at full throttle due to the hook in the bottom (or is it hog when the bottom is concaved), One of the reasons I decided to go full guns on the bottom is to fix that!

Planning Surface

greetings all, this is a side thread to "bottom rebuild (prev 'at a cross roads)" My boat has a hook (concave area ) at the stern which causes handling issues when I push it past half throttle (she's got a 100 HP after all!). My plan is to use marine filler to fair the garboards flat again...

Re: Bottom Rebuild (prev. 'At a cross road')

Over she goes! Today three brothers came by and between the four of us rolled her over and up onto the trailer. To prepare to roll it off the trailer onto the ground, I lifted the boat up off the trailer a few inches. Raised the rollers that go down the center of the trailer, and lowered the bunks. ...

That's great work and just what I need to do. How did you go about cutting that scarf joint? it looks great. Re: Bottom Rebuild (prev. 'At a cross road')

Not much progress to report. Life has been demanding of late. I've installed three 'rollover braces'. As i said before, totally over engineered. But, I want to have the hull on the trailer and these braces will support the hull when I roll it, and when it is on the trailer. http://i172.photobucket.c...

Cleaning white vinyl decking

My deck is covered in white vinyl. Stains galore. If I use a mild bleach solution, will it damage or yellow the vinyl?

thats the stuff I think about when I lay in bed at night trying to fall asleep.......
That and, once I roll the boat over, how do I get it up on the trailer
