I've used Citristrip a lot, and have found that if I apply it thickly, cover the area with plastic, and then leave overnight, it works better. If your paint or varnish is thick, it may take 2 applications. The overnight time helps, and the Citristrip will not dry out if you keep it covered with plas...

The good news is that you will not need any drawings to replace the ribs. Go to a lumber yard and buy heartwood white oak (not kiln dried), mill ribs (paying attention to the grain direction) to the same cross section as the ribs you are replacing, steam the ribs and install them. The hull serves as...

I also found a good number of them indented on my Grady, and did not do any wood filling. I put a nut driver onto them all and tightened (moderately) any that were loose. On some, the bolt would spin before tightening, so I would need to remove the filler from the bolt head and have someone hold a s...

Wow - that was quick! Thank you both. The large one in the photo would work, but let me think about it and see if anything else in a little better shape materializes. As Karl mentioned - there is no rush unless I intend to strap ice skates on the bottom of the boat to use her. That would not do much...

I would prefer to find one from the period if I can, even if there is some difference between the Grady and Thompson ones. I understand how hard it is to find anything right after a move. Once you get things sorted out Andreas, please keep me in mind in case you see anything. Thanks.

Bow Eye

I was wondering if anyone has an extra bow eye that they would like to sell, or would know where I could find one. The ring is almost worn through were the trailer strap clips on my 1961 Grady White Hatteras. The bow eye has a single threaded stud going through the stem. Thanks for your help.

I restored a Penn Yan that was stored on a roller bunk trailer, and there definitely was a bit of waviness in the bottom planks from the rollers. It was not bad enough to affect the boat handling, but I decided to replace the roller bunks with flat bunks and I feel much better seeing the boat sittin...

Outer Keel Replacement

I need to fabricate a new outer keel for a 17ft Grady White Hatteras. I am thinking that I can make the keel from a straight piece of oak and that it will be able to bend enough when fastened to follow the slight curve of the hull up near the stem. Is this a good assumption or should I be looking at...

To follow-up on Andreas' question, there are screws through the outer overlapping plank into the inner plank, but they do not protude through the inner plank. To tighten, you need to uncover the head of the screw on the outside. My Penn Yan was leaking between the planks before I recaulked, so the o...

I finished restoring a very similar Penn Yan (one foot shorter) last spring, and am working right now on a Grady White. The Penn Yan is a very nice looking and fun to drive boat, - really enjoyed it this summer, and it is well made. I would be concerned about the lack of forward keel rollers. My Pen...

Storing Varnish

I am thinking of trying to store unused varnish in a clean wine bottle and use a wine bottle vaccum pump and stopper to try to get all the air out. Does this sound like a reasonable idea? Any better ones so I do not waste all the left over varnish after opening a can?

I've had great success using foam brushes for varnish, and have never heard of varnish being a problem with any foam brushes. If you are worried about the particular foam brushes you bought, pour a little varnish into a separate container and put the brush in for a while to see if the brush disolves...

I am pretty sure the electric shift units require Type C lubricant in the lower unit. You should definitely drain whatever is in there and refill with fresh. If the oil is white or milky, then the lower unit needs to be resealed before refilling. I still believe what you are seeing drip is unburned ...
