Roll and tip painting

The information I have seen from both Pettit and Interlux suggest rolling in one direction and tipping off with strokes at 90 degrees. On lapstrakes, if I roll along the length of the boards and tip off across the boards, I would think that would lead to more brush imperfections at the start of all ...

Hi Roberta, Please remember as you work to remove the bottom paint that it is toxic. The first boat I did, I wore a simple dust mask and sanded - something I would not recommend. Even if the dust mask catches the dust as you are working, the dust ends up all over your clothes, your work area, and ge...

I was wondering if anyone has any comments or suggestions regarding which topside paint I should buy. Any application tips would also be greatly appreciated.

Thank you all for your comments. Steve Johnson also gave me some very helpful information and I am no longer as concerned. I have had a very good experience with my Johnson, and see no reason why I would not like the Merc as much or more. I agree that it is definitely a much cooler looking engine as...

1962 Maercury 850

I am looking at purchasing a boat with a 1962 Mercury 850. It sure looks nice, but my mechanic raised some concerns when comparing to a '66 Johnson 80 that I have on my current boat (1964 Mason). In a nutshell, he left me with the impression that the Merc is more complicated, less reliable and noisi...

Thank you all for the advise. I am working inside in a shop where others are present, so I decided to avoid any of the strippers with strong vapors. I tested the Interlux 299 and Citrisrip and to my surprise, the Citristrip worked much better than the Interlux. I left both strippers on sections of t...

Thanks Andreas. I do not see a good way to mount a keel roller on this particular trailer. There is no central member anywhere under the keel and the only cross members are back near the bunks. Do you think with 8 ft bunks that forward keel support is important?

Is this trailer OK for a wooden boat?

I am looking at a lightly used trailer for my 1962 Penn Yan 16 ft outboard. It has 4 bunks. The two inner bunks are 8 ft by 6". The outer bunks are slightly shorter. There are no keel rollers so the boat is unsupported in front of the end of the inner bunks. The length of the trailer fits, and ...

Best way to strip paint

I am preparing to remove all of the bottom paint and topside paint from the hull of a 1962 16ft Penn Yan lapstrake boat. I was wondering if anyone has advice on the best way to accomplish this. If it is chemicals, any advice on the best product to buy would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Thank you all for your help. The flipping went fine without any problems. Three of us did it. We ran a strap under the boat near the transom and attached a strap to the front eye. We lifted the boat off the trailer with come-alongs attached between the straps and I-beams overhead. With the boat susp...

Flipping a 16 ft Penn Yan

Hi All - I am new to this forum and am working to restore a 16 ft Penn Yan outboard. I am about to try flipping the boat. I have removed the engine, windshield, seating, floorboards, fuel tank and battery. Above the boat is a high ceiling with exposed steel I beams. I am thinking of attaching 3 come...
