Re: New member: What does she say?

BoatswainBob, Welcome aboard. It defenately looks like a Thompson family boat. First thing to determining the model you have is to go to the Main Page on this site and click on "What Do I Have" and post the information requested under that section, i.e. overall length, width at widest poin...

Re: Sealing joints

Here is the detail as shown in Thompson's literature. I have no idea of what the actural radius was that they used for their cutters. Right now with the snow I can not get to any of my boats to see if I could detrermine the radius at this time. http://i1220.photobucket.com/albums/dd449/phillblank/Th...

Re: Deck Wood Variations

Steve, The filler stain should even out the wood tones, but there may still be a little differance between the lighter wood and the darker areas. That is the nature of wood and is what I like about building things with wood. Try a test area on the bottom side of the deck boards where it will be hidd...

Re: Cruisers Inc back home

Txcaptain,

I remember see the photos of this boat when you were restoring it a few years back. Still looking as nice as it did then.

Good Luck,

Re: Dumpster Diving

Only problem I see with this is that a Great Old Pipe Organ was trashed. Almost as bad as someone putting a wood boat on the burn pile.

But I'm glad you were able to salvage the lumber at least for reuse.

Re: Sealing joints

Brad, The original planking, cedar strips, were concave on oneside and convex on the other with a small area in the center of the convex side that protruded slightly beyond the convex surface. This was what Thompson refered to as "compressed seam planking". Thompson was the only manufactur...

Re: Sealing joints

Gaff, I recommend using Boat Life as a filler on cedar strip boat. It can be forced down into smaller voids and can be used along with string packing for wider voids. It remains flexable and can be sanded aand painted when totally cured. Thompson used white lead and linseed oil to make a paste they ...

Phill's New Garage & Boat Storeage

Hi All, Thought I would post a couple pictures of the new 36 x 32 garage and boat storage I built this past summer at my new home in northern Wisconsin. It took four of us 28 days from start of build to the finished building once the concrete cured. I've also included an aerial shot of new home I ca...

EDsboat,

Did you try calling the phone number in my last post? Possibly that person, Chuck, knows what the special color mix was that he got.

I do not know what the exact color was or from whom Thompson got it.

Good Luck,

Phill

EDsboat, If you do a search in this form you can find a lot of items that have been covered in the past. Not always real fast but take your time and you can find the info. Here is what I found. "Here's is what someone sent me once regarding the blue trapazoid shape: 60 and 120 degree angles; 15...

JALL, I have used the spiral split wire loom material for all my wiring runs. It is easy to add additial wire as needed or to bring out a set of wires any place along the wire run for accessories. I use tape to hold wiring in place at ends and any that break out along the run. I also use the plastic...

Abbottep, A lot of the deck hardware, etc. was after market and installed by the dealers. Watch Ebay and go to boat shows and look for the items you want or need. Also ask if you do not see it out at a boat show or swap meet. Many times the guy may have it but not out or he may know someone to conta...

Rong, I agree with Andreas on using BoatLife sealant rather then 3M 5200, CPES on all surfaces and wetting the plywood to help relieve stress in the plywood when bending it. Also when applying your plywood start at the bow and work your way toward the stern. This will give you more leverage when ben...

sdwilburn,

Torchie is correct. It will lift any existing finishes. You need to strip and sand all existing finishes to bare wood before using CPES.

Good Luck,
