to stain or not to stain?
while i'm waiting for a part to be made, i've been working on some interior parts. i have a 1957 15' sea coaster deluxe made in peshtigo. my queston is this: what parts of the boat were stained at the factory? pictures i've seen on this site and others look similar in appearance, and then there are ...

top keel
thanks for the input. previous owner must have put the mahogany planks on at some time. i have found a gentleman near me that has a '57 sea coaster. i'm going to visit him for those measurements. ALSO, since i don't know what kind of windshield my boat had, he's going to let me take pictures and mea...

top keel
on my '57 15' sea coaster, i have the width at the transom and the width where the top keel(?) meets the forefoot (inner keel) at the stem, BUT because the middle was rotten, i don't have the exact length or where the top keel begins to narrow toward the stem. if you have a similar model, would you ...

forefoot ?
thanks andreas. i'll search "inner stem" to see what i can find out. the stem was not covering the plank ends - maybe shrinkage over the years. at any rate, the new stem will be wider, and i'll be able to make sure the plank ends are covered. maybe, you can help with another question. i di...

forefoot ?
at the beginning of april, i asked for some advice on the forefoot of my '57 15' sea coaster. no replies. at any rate, i tried three times to make the forefoot. BUT, i soon found that it was beyond my abilities. so, i found the manatawac bay boatworks in saugatuck, michigan. i took the forefoot (jus...

back to the forefoot
i'm getting ready to bend the forefoot on my '57 15' sea coaster. BUT the longer i look at it, and the more reading i do a thought occurred to me. in fact in the wooden boat series FRAME, STEM AND KEEL REPAIR there is a picture on page 72 that depicts exactly what i had in mind. however, i would onl...

back again!
i've ordered a 16' piece of lumber to make new garboards. i have enough of the old ones for a pattern. how do i cut it near the stem since there is some curvature? do i simply lay the old garboard on to the new piece and cut? do i somehow soak it? there is no way it is going to fit in my steam box! ...

thanks karl. on a previous post, andreas said that the peshtigo boat inner hulls were not stained. so, after all the sanding and bleaching, the planks turned out pretty decent. i was almost certain that both shearstrakes would need replacing and that's okay. for sure i will cpes the the entire inner...

first, thank you for the help on my forefoot question. would have responded sooner, but i now am sharing a computer. also, i found out in frame, stem, and keel repair (p.72) that the part i was referring to is called an apron. sorry. i didn't mean to cause any confusion. to my questions: 1) when i b...
