Gas Tank location.
P1020309.JPG I will post this question here at see what responses I get. My Thompson is running twin Johnsons. The gas tanks that came with the boat have really short fuel lines on them. Which leads me to believe that they were put into the motor well when running the boat. If you look at the pre r...

Re: gale engines
I would suggest finding a manuel for your motor. That will help you when you start to take things apart. And you might as well plan on a complete refresh of that engine. My Thompson has twin 1957 35 hp Johnson's on it that were not run since before 1971. I got the boat in 2010. Both turned over when...

Re: Black oily stuff-Johnson 35hp
John. A quick way is to do a compression test but as I said if it is intermitent you may not catch it. Or you may get a different number while doing multiple test on the same cylinder suggesting some times it seals and others it doesn't. But I have heard of cases where the engine continues to run we...

Re: Redecking my Off Shore
thanks for the photos. I too have to redeck my offshore (1965) someday. Are there any fastners that hold the deck down, or just the boat life caulk? if so, what did you use, nails, screws, .. and how do you cover up the heads? Also, when you applied the stain, did you seal first, or just apply the ...

Re: Black oily stuff-Johnson 35hp
Check your compression relief valves to make sure they are seating properly. If not they will leak and this is the results. Out the valves. Into the lower motor case and then down the exhaust leg. Could also explain why sometimes it seems like it is running on 1 cylinder. Low compression on the cyli...

Re: Turning the screws
Just make them as tight as you feel comortable with. If you are using the correct length screw you won't hve a lot of thread showing past the nut. Use a nut driver. It looks like a screwdriver handel with socket end on it. Don't use a regular socket and rachet or wrench as It will be to easy to real...

IMG_3066.JPG Peter. I used Z-Spar Standard Mahogany Filler-stain #1095 Now owned and produced bt Pettit. This is the stain that appears to be accepted as the closest to the original Thompson color here on the forum. I like it. Make sure you get the standard as they make a brown and a red Mahogany a...

IMG_3057.JPG IMG_3061.JPG Yes Andre by "contouring I mean the top edge of the deck. I use a folded piece of sandpaper in my hand. Not too high tech but it works for me. You don't really have to take to much off. Plus since I am redecking the whole boat the contour doesn't have to be an exact d...

Thanks Andreas.
Missed the rally again this year. Stayed home to celebrate my wife's birthday and the occasion of having all
the chicks home in the nest. One of these times I will get there. Hopefully those that went will post more pics.

Re: Redecking my Off Shore
I will reinstall the decking using a thin coating of Boatlife on the framing.
Then I will contour the top edge of the decking. Sand. Stain ,seal and keep on going....

Re: Redecking my Off Shore
I recut the deck sheet to with in a quarter of an inch of the traced line and screwed the shield to the rub rail.
This allowed me to dress down the decking with a belt sander and not cut into the rub rail.

Re: Painting Plastic Barrels
Rustoleum will not stick to plastic barrels. You can try rattle cans of Krylon Paint that is made to paint plastic or spend the big bucks and get automotive paint that is formulated to stick to rubber and plastic bumpers. Most auto stores that mix Paint can put it in rattle cans for you. But dependi...
