'57 johnson

just purchased a 1957 Johnson javelin. I know less about these than I do wooden boats !! sooooooo, does anyone have a source for parts, shop manuals, owner's guide, etc. ? although I'm far from putting an engine on the old boat, I'd like to get started on collecting stuff - it may be my winter proje...

not too much trouble

if you own a 50's 15 foot sea coaster (mine is a '57 deluxe) and without too much trouble could give me the measurement from the dashboard to the back of the front seat, I'd really appreciate it. thanks...

what about a floor?

I want to eventually put a floor in my '57 sea coaster deluxe. I'm thinking about this now because it's getting close to installing the inner keel. however, atop the inner keel sits a brace running from the transom to just in front of the rear seat. the sister keels (?) keelson (?) run to just shy o...

varnish prep

I have sanded, bleached, sanded, stained, and sealed the interior hull of my '57 Thompson seacoaster. now, I have just sanded the cpes sealer with 220 grit. BUT, I can't get into the dimples around the nuts with sandpaper and a soft toothbrush isn't doing the job either. I've read where the varnish ...

another thompson

an elderly couple, friends of my wife, gave us a Thompson that had not been used in years - especially with a crack in the hull. I haven't found any serial numbers on the id plate BUT at the top of the plate it has MODEL GV 170. it is about 16' long and must have been a beautiful boat at one time - ...

order of assembly?

getting ready to temporarily assemble parts of my '57 15' sea coaster. in what order do the inner keel, garboard, and outer keel go together? anything I should keep in mind as I assemble these parts? tricks of the trade, etc. thanks as always... p.s. answered my last restoration question (fyi): the ...

inner keel/stem

getting ready to install (temporarily) the inner keel to the inner stem/keel assembly. if you own a 15' circa '57 sea coaster, i'm not sure if frame #8 (because the original was deteriorated) is where the two keels meet. I know the first seven frames are half frames - notched into the inner stem/kee...

Re: inner stem/keel

thanks again, phil. I like your suggestion. I know it isn't going to be easy because a boat restoration company in saugatuk, Michigan wanted to charge me seven hundred dollars to duplicate it, and they have the correct tools! when you look at the various angles, it's easy to understand why they want...

Re: inner stem/keel

thanks for your effort phil. I was interested in how to cut the rabbets (although I just found out that is not what those notches in the inner stem where the frames meet it are called - can't recall the correct terms). I can copy the old notches but a few are terribly deteriorated/distorted. neverth...

if you have ever replaced this item on a sea coaster (mine is a '57 15 footer), I would REALLY appreciate any advice/hints as to how to proceed. Johnson lumber in charlotte, Michigan suggested quarter sawn white oak which I used. using the method suggested by folks on this site, I steamed the piece ...

rear seat brace

on my '57 15' sea coaster deluxe (model 477), the upper rear seat brace which runs from the top of the shearstrake on the port side to the starboard needs to be replaced. what i'd like to know is can that brace be attached to a frame as opposed to the shearstrake itself. it just seems to me that wou...
