stripping and sanding and chilling - OH MY!

in the process of refurbishing the inside of my '57 sea coaster (i really don't mind the effort), i was just wondering what tools those of you who have done this use. at the moment, i'm using a chemical stripper followed by an odorless thinner to rinse (odorless because i'm in a garage, in michigan,...

alternatives?

on a recent visit to johnson lumber company in charlotte, michigan, i inquired about marine douglas fir for the bottom of my '57 sea coaster. since they didn't have any, the salesman suggested hydrotek plywood. does anyone have experience with this wood? is it a good/better substitute? inquiring min...

inside the boat

fully aware of murphy's law, i'd appreciate ANY ideas on how to sand the inside of my '57 sea coaster around the brass bolts and nuts (without removing any of the bolts and nuts). being new to these boats, i don't want to damage or disturb anything which could cause problems down the line. liquid pa...

a while back i did get to borrow the cd from a friend for a couple of days. according to the cd, i believe it is the model 477 you mentioned. all the decking had been removed, but the structural members (some of them) were left intact including the frame around the motor where a deck would have been...

you guys are great! 71068CC was identified by miles to be a '57 sea coaster. also, i mentioned to him that there is a P burned into the transom to the right and below the number. miles also thought it might be the deluxe model because there are two cockpits, and i found pieces of what look like red ...

whatchamacallit part 3

thanks phil. if my kids lived in town i'd be able to put some pictures up. i had to send miles photographs in order for him to identify my thompson. but the wood in question was badly deteriorated oak. when i picked up the boat it was literally sitting in the burn pile. the decking had been burned, ...

whatchamacallit part 2

thanks andreas. good point. the piece to which i was referring runs along the bottom of the boat (the bilge ?). as i mentioned, it sits directly on top of the the frames - from the stern to the stem. then, on top of it there is another piece from the stern to about one third the length of the boat. ...

whatchamacallit ?

just a couple of items if anyone can help. on my '57 sea coaster, there is a piece of wood which runs almost the entire length of the boat and sits on top of the frames. what is it called? more importantly, of what is it made? at the lumber store, they identified it as mahogany. so, i bought a piece...

new to site. new to wooden boats. new to ..... BUT now that i own a thompson - and love it! i have my first question (other than my sanity). after removing the floor (garboards?), i discovered a kerf at the bottom of the frames (ribs?) - the ones that are left :) either the kerf is there to relieve ...
