stain colors for 1959 Sea Lancer

Post by mike mcintyre »

I found that the gunnell (gunwhale) strake and gunnell cap on my boat were both stained dark walnut brown. The rest of the mahogany is the standard red/mahogany. Also, the rub rail was painted white and I noticed on some of the boats they are stained and varnished. I'm not totally constipated about this but would like to know if all red/mahogany is correct or the combo. Thanks, Mike McIntyre

On 1950s and 1960s lapstrake boats made at Peshtigo, the stain shade should be the same for all components. No two-tone stain.

The spray rail should be stained and varnished, same as the other components.

On boats made at Cortland, NY they did use a different stain shade on the deck tow rails and the spray rails were painted blue or red. I am not certain what years they did this, but it definately was different than what was done at Peshtigo.

The interior of the boat's ribs and planking (called ceiling) should be varnished only - no stain.
