New to the boat and the website - what do I have?

Post by Jim Tesno »

Hi! This is my first post. Just got a Thompson. Was told it is a 1958. Measures 19'. Serial # on outside transom, starboard is IA204331M63A. Number on inside transom is 71629 V V. Can't find a metal tag, don't know if they were used back then. Do these numbers make sense?

Welcome aboard.

The "IAZ..." is a state of Iowa assigned registration/serial number. It has nothing to do with the make, model or year of the boat.

IF the boat is a wooden lapstrake outboard and made by Thompson Bros. Boat Mfg. Co. at Peshtigo, WI, the "71629VV" COULD indicate a 1957 model year boat, the 1,629th boat of all models built that year. It could also be a 1947 or 1967.

In 1957 he largest boat made by Thomspon Bros. at Peshtigo was the Off-Shore at 18'-0" centerline length.

IF she was built at Cortland, the hull ID deciphering is completely different.

IF it was built by some other builder, then the hull ID has other meaning particular to that builder.

Pictures are very helpful along with centerline length; gunwale length; beam; and transom width.

Is there a metal tag with maximum HP and weight capacity ratings?

You can email pics directly to me if you wish: thompsonboat@msn.com
