Mercury In-Line 6 points conversion

Post by thegammas »

I'm attempting to convert my '63 in-line 6 Merc 1000 (100 hp) from dual points to electronic ignition using an automotive points conversion kit. Interested parties can see the thread on my second favorite web site fiberglassics....

Wow Peter! I read the thread and that is all I can say. I guess I am still old school. I just finished a total rebuild on the V-8 in my wife's 4 Winns and left in the points style distributor. Can't even begin to count the number of "youngsters" I have taught to gap points.
Have a great New Year!

Ya know Carl, I prefer the old school as well. I've kept the points distrib set up in my '67 beetle. Simple to set up. And yep, I've sucessfuly gapped a bunch of points in my day as well. But there is something about that dual points set up on the Merc, the need to syncro the points (in addition to gapping), and having to do it off the motor, I just could never seem to get it to my satisfaction. And those points sets are becoming harder to find, and silly expensive.

Ahhh those are all excuses. I just want to see if I can pull it off!

I have been known to do a few things just to see if I could
Good luck and keep us posted.
