Peshtigo Boat ID

Post by JALL »

How can I tell if a boat was made in Peshtigo or somewhere else? Are these boats ( Peshtigo built ) any better than any others? I just looked at a '64 Sea Coaster and didn't see any tag or other markings. Thanks for any help!

There were TWO (2) "Thompson Boat" firms in 1964: Thompson Bros. Boat Mfg. Co. at Peshtigo, WI and Thompson Boat Company of New York, Inc. a wholly owned subsidiary of Chris Craft at Cortland, NY.

By 1964 they made very different product lines. Cortland did not have anything called "Sea Coaster" after 1963. The Peshtigo built boats in 1964 were not even close in appearance to those made by Thompson of NY.

There also were in 1964 Cruisers, Inc. at Oconto, WI and T & T Boats, Inc. in Wausaukee, WI. All these boat builders were owned or managed by various members of the Thompson family. They all competed against each other.

All these firms made high quality boats. None was necessarily better than the other.

In 1964 Thompson of NY will have a hull ID that conformed to the Chris-Craft system. It is very unique compared to Peshtigo built boats.

Pictures are helpful. These can be compared to the brochures of the various firms (brochures are available for purchase on CD-ROM at www.wcha.org and www.dragonflycanoe.com)

How do you know it is a 1964 Sea Coaster? Is there a "Sea Coaster" metal name badge on the dashboard? Is there a hull ID stamped into the wood of the transom inside the boat?
